Our History

The West Gate has been a part of Associated Care Centres for 16 years, but enjoyed a long and remarkable history prior to this.

In the early 20th century, The Hockeredge Hotel formed part of an estate owned by a London manufacturer of lavender water. During this time it was surrounded by several acres of land bounding Canterbury Road which formed one complete lavender bed. In the late 1920's, The Hockeredge was sold for use as a guesthouse, the frontage sold to Margate builders Wood & Company and over the next two decades it was developed into houses. After 1950, the remainder of the rear estate was sold and developed into houses and bungalows.

In 1960 The Hockeredge was sold for use as an old people's home. It was purchased by Associated Care Centres as The Hockeredge & Jasmine Centre in 2001, renamed The West Gate in 2017, and is now a 50-bed nursing and residential home for adults and older people with physical and mental health illness.
